About Q-Bio

ENLIGHT Quantum for Biomedicine Initiative (Q-Bio) is a cross-disciplinary European initiative that connects experts in quantum physics, biomedicine, medical technologies, and health innovation across the ENLIGHT university alliance. Coordinated by Comenius University Bratislava, the project brings together researchers from leading European institutions to explore how emerging quantum technologies can transform healthcare, diagnostics, and biomedical research.

The initiative focuses on building a collaborative ecosystem where physicists, clinicians, engineers, and biomedical researchers can work together to overcome the traditional barriers between their disciplines. Q-Bio aims to accelerate the application of quantum sensing, quantum imaging, quantum materials, and quantum computing in life sciences and medicine.

Quantum technologies are expected to revolutionize healthcare by enabling ultra-sensitive diagnostics, advanced medical imaging, real-time therapeutic monitoring, and powerful data-driven analysis beyond the capabilities of classical technologies. However, progress in this area is often limited by the lack of shared educational pathways and communication between scientific communities. Q-Bio addresses this challenge by creating a structured framework for interdisciplinary cooperation within the ENLIGHT alliance.

Main Objectives

  • Establish a sustainable interdisciplinary network connecting quantum physicists, biomedical scientists, clinicians, and engineers.
  • Develop shared educational resources and introductory learning materials in quantum biomedicine.
  • Support mobility and collaboration through short-term research visits and staff exchanges.
  • Organize online seminars, workshops, and community-building activities.
  • Create a digital knowledge hub containing educational resources, scientific updates, outreach materials, and collaboration opportunities.
  • Prepare a joint strategic review paper: „The Future of Quantum-Driven Technologies in Biomedicine: An EU Perspective.“

Activities and Timeline

The project runs throughout 2026 and includes several key phases:

  • Network activation and planning
  • Research mobility and knowledge exchange
  • Online seminars and educational outreach
  • Development of a digital collaboration platform
  • Preparation of a strategic roadmap for future EU-level cooperation
  • Final hybrid workshop and dissemination event in Bratislava

A major concluding event will be a hybrid cross-disciplinary workshop hosted at Comenius University Bratislava, bringing together researchers, educators, and stakeholders from across Europe to shape the future direction of quantum-enabled healthcare and biomedical innovation.

Long-Term Vision

Q-Bio is envisioned as the foundation for a long-term European ecosystem in quantum biomedicine. The initiative supports broader European priorities in quantum technologies, health innovation, and workforce development, complementing initiatives such as the Quantum Flagship and the European Health Data Space.

By integrating expertise from multiple scientific domains and institutions, Q-Bio aims to strengthen Europe’s leadership in next-generation medical technologies and foster a durable research and education network for quantum-enabled healthcare.
